EDuardo SAverin (ES)
Eduardo Saverin is played in this movie as a character who has to work very hard for his power. He is also perhaps the most socially normal of the characters, not portraying many of the socially dysfunctional "quirks" shown by some of the other main characters. This, however, does not aid him in keeping his control when his power is threatened by both his friend and his replacement.
Saverin is perhaps, in this sense, the most naive of the characters, believing that he would never be stripped of his control, much less by his best friend and co-founder.
Andrew Garfield plays the role of Saverin and does so perfectly recreating his emotions and thought processes to the point of almost becoming him. Garfield performs perhaps the best acting of the film.

QuotesES: [Answering a call from Mark on his cell phone] Yeah?
MZ: You froze our account? ES: I did. MZ: You froze the account! ES: I had to get your attention Mark. MZ: Do you realize that you jeopardized the entire company? Do you realize that your actions could have permanently destroyed everything I've been working on? ES: WE have been working on! MZ: [speaking frantically, almost hysterical] Without money the site can't function. Okay, let me tell you the difference between Facebook and everyone else, we don't crash EVER! If those servers are down for even a day, our entire reputation is irreversibly destroyed! Users are fickle, Friendster has proved that. Even a few people leaving would reverberate through the entire user base. The users are interconnected, that is the whole point. College kids are online because their friends are online and if one domino goes, the other dominos go, don’t you get that? I am not going back to the Caribbean Night at AEPi! SP: Hang on. Almost forgot.
[holds a check in front of Eduardo] SP: Here's your $19,000. I wouldn't cash it, though. I drew it on the account you froze. [Eduardo goes to hit Sean; Sean cowers] ES: [pulls back, his eyes wet, but staring to smile] I like standing next to you, Sean. It makes me look so tough. [walks out, escorted by two security guards] SP: You think you know me, don't you?
ES: I've read enough. SP: You know how much I've read about you? SP: [whispers] Nothing. ES: [takes Mark's laptop and smashes it down on the desk, destroying it] How about now? You still wired in?
SP: Call security. ES: You issued 24 million new shares of stock. MZ: You were told that if new investors came along... ES: How much were your shares diluted? ES: [points to Sean] How much were his? MZ: You signed the papers.
ES: [almost in tears] You set me up. MZ: You're gonna blame me because you were the business head of the company and you made a bad business deal with your own company? ES: This is gonna be like I'm not a part of Facebook! SP: It won't be like you're not a part of Facebook. You're not a part of Facebook. ES: My name's on the masthead. SP: You might wanna check again. ES: Just because I froze the account? SP: Did you think we were going to let you parade around in your ridiculous suits pretending you were running this company? ES: [cutting him off; screaming] Sorry! My Prada's at the cleaners! Along with my hoodie and my 'fuck you' flip-flops, you pretentious douchebag! SP: Security's here, you'll be leaving now. ES: I'm not signing those papers. SP: We will get the signature. ES: [to Mark] Tell me this isn't about me getting into the Phoenix. [Mark scoffs] ES: [in disbelief] You... You did it! I knew you did it! You planted that story about the chicken! MZ: I didn't plant the story about the chicken. SP: What's he talking about? ES: You had me accused of animal cruelty. SP: Seriously, what the hell's the chicken? ES: [leans down close to Mark, his voice low and dangerous] And I'll bet what you hated the most was that they identified me as a co-founder of Facebook, which I am. You better lawyer up asshole, because I'm not coming back for 30%, I'm coming back for EVERYTHING. [backs away from Mark slowly, still looking at him] |
Character AnalysisSaverin is intelligent and does have power but that power is often taken away from him by Mark and often by Sean he has to use the only power he has over either of them and the company which is the economic power. This is shown in this quote.
Eduardo is once again shown to be stripped of his power by both Sean and Mark so he has to revert to an even baser form of power in physical power. He scares Sean using the threat of injury and pain but is also shown to be losing control of his own power and his own emotions.
Here Saverin is seen to be trying to defend his position next to Mark from Sean who is trying to trick Mark into replacing Saverin with Parker. This shows that whilst Saverin is intelligent and economically powerful he still has self-doubts and is therefore feels threatened by Parker's entry into the "Facebook" company.
When Saverin realises that he has been betrayed by both Zuckerberg and Parker, all elements of restraints and patience towards mark are let go and he lets all of his anger, resentment and self-doubt out in a single release of rage. This shows that Saverin is the type of person which can put up with a certain amount without reacting but when they reach their limit, explode.
When he finds out that he has been robbed of his power he tries to retaliate and tries to grasp at any straw of power not stripped by Mark and Sean. He then threatens Mark by saying that he will be back. This shows that Saverin is brought to his knees by Mark's betrayal and needs the temporary retaliatory satisfaction before his emotions break out and betray him as well.
